If you're inclined towards the young, athletic
and financially lucrative, then Colorado's snow resorts are happy
hunting grounds. So where do you meet the snow bunny or beau of
your dreams? We have a few suggestions.
Aspen
is known for its celebrity scene. Check out The Caribou Club, Club
Chelsea and Little Nell, magnets for those who love good conversation
and lots of dancing. Sinful Bloody Mary's can be found at the Hotel
Jerome's J-Bar and people watchers congregate at the Acme Bar and
Cooper Street Pier.
Telluride
also attracts a glittering aprés ski crowd, where many flock
to the live entertainment at the Fly Me to the Moon Saloon on Main
Street. For the hoi paloi, the Sheridan Opera House hosts more than
200 events yearly, including concerts, films, theater productions,
comedy shows, magic shows, benefits and more.
In
Vail, the hottest spots are known to be The Club, with live music
(better get there early) and The Platz'l Street Bar in the Sannenalp's
Austria Haus, where the infamous "mudslide" has laid many
an aprés skier low.
Ski
Cooper offers a unique dining experience with the Tennessee Pass
Cookhouse, or you can head up the road to Leadville for shopping
and dining in a town of classic Victorian architecture.
If
your looking for something a little classier than a bar scene, check
out The Vilar Center for the Arts in Beaver Creek, where world-class
music and dance performances are featured year-round.
After
a hard day on the Sunlight slopes, don't miss a dip in Glenwood
Springs' largest outdoor natural hot-springs pool. If you're lucky,
a barbershop quartet might be soaking nearby and regale your party
with a tune or two. And if you're the mood for some fine but casual
cuisine, check out The Bayou's outrageous Cajun-style cuisine or
the Italian Underground's memorably elegant Italian.
For
a unique experience, The Lodge at Sunspot in Winter Park serves
gourmet five-course dinners in the dining room or all-you-can-eat
family barbecue in the Provisioner. Just take the Zephyr Express
lift and enjoy a mountaintop sleigh ride either before or after
your meal.
Another
authentic Rocky Mountain experience can be found at Snowmass, where
you can take a sleigh ride to the Burlingame Cabin for an authentic
Western-style barbecue dinner.
Vacation
shoppers will enjoy cruising the historic districts in Breckenridge
and Durango or the art galleries of Salida and Buena Vista near
Monarch Ski Area. Ladies don't miss the second-hand clothing stores
in Aspen, where you can find designer clothes at a real steal of
a deal.
Crested
Butte is a culinary sophisticates dream, with more than 40 gourmet
restaurants, brew pubs and bakeries to chose from; choose from formal
to casual settings. Take a sleigh ride up the mountainside for a
steak dinner at the Paradise Warming House, drink fine wine at the
Princess Wine Bar or dance through the night at the Eldo.
Breckenridge
will draw you out of the cozy resorts for some snow gazing with
their International Snow Sculpture Championships Jan. 16-20. Teams
from as far away as Monacco compete to turn 10 foot by 10 foot by
12 foot blocks of packed snow into masterpieces of lyrical ice.
Participants have 65 hours and are judged on design and visual presentation.
Powderhorn
continues the outdoors theme into the night with a monthly torchlight
parade, fireworks display and moonlight snowshoe tours that will
appeal to those with energy to spare. Just watch out for wildlife.
Powderhorn is known to have one of the densest bear populations
of any ski area in the country.
Steamboat
Springs also provides additional outdoors activities with their
Winter Carnival, Feb. 5-11. A healthy mix of ranchers, cowboys and
resort-town locals, the 88th annual carnival will provide an exciting
counterpoint to snow sport activities.
With plenty to choose from, you may be too exhausted
from aprés ski activities to actually get around to the "ski"
part of the day. So schedule an extra day or two to enjoy all that
Colorado's snow resorts have to offer and really enjoy your winter
vacation.
