Crested Butte reigns from heart of Rockies
Located in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, only 24 miles from a commercial airport, Crested Butte boasts more double-black diamond terrain than any other resort in Colorado.
For Fort Collins' residents without wings, however, this hidden gem is a bit more difficult to reach. With a drive time of nearly six hours and 254 miles, it's no weekend getaway. Still, this home to the annual U.S. Extreme Skiing and Snowboard Championships can be mighty tempting for the advanced snow sportster.
Vital statistics: The vertical rise is 2,787 feet with 1,434 skiable acres, 13 lifts and 85 trails. They claim an average snowfall of 300 inches with 300 snowmaking acres. Crested Butte's season is from November 19 to April 16. Special facilities include two NASTAR courses, half-pipe and snowshoe loop.
Apres ski fans can enjoy Colorado's larges National Historic District, also known as the town of Crested Butte. You'll find many gourmet restaurants, brew pubs, bakeries. Choose from world-class cuisine or a hearty meal beside a huge log fire.
Free Mountain Express shuttle service runs between the mountain, the lodges and the shops.
