Durango no 'Purgatory'
for snow enthusiasts
Early settlers thought
they could discourage outsiders by naming their new beautiful home Purgatory.
The popularity of the newly renamed Durango Mountain Resort clearly indicates
their negative PR scam didn't work out so well, however.
Still,
the nicknames for the resorts "front side" features indicate
a sense of humor for the name inspired by Dante's Divine Comedy: Pandemonium,
Paradise, Catharsis, Lower Hades and Styx feature premium mogul runs.
But the Dante references are dropped on the "back side," where
the runs tend towards great cruisers and longer, challenging steeps.
Vital
statistics: The vertical rise is 2,029 feet with 1,200 skiable acres,
11 lifts and 75 trails. Durango claims an average snowfall of 260 inches
per year with 250 snowmaking acres. Special facilities include a race
arena, adventure park, beginner area, terrain park and half pipe.
A helpful tip: Winter is considered Durango's
off-season, so lodging is reduced up to 60 percent from summer prices.
No easy side trip for Fort Collins' residents--a healthy eight-hour drive
of 460 miles--those reduced prices will help make your snow vacation a
bit easier on the pocket book.
