Winter Park best known for Mary Jane
Avoid the morning rush. Join the afternoon rush, instead. Winter Park insiders recommend arriving at the resort the afternoon before you ski so you can pick up the next day's rental equipment and lift tickets, register for classes, make reservations at the Children's Center and take care of all other details in advance.
But since Winter Park is a mere two-plus-hours drive (129 miles) from Fort Collins, why not stick to the standard plan and strike out around 5 a.m. to hit those slopes nice and early.
The resort includes two mountains: Winter Park and Mary Jane, the latter includes Parsenn Bow and Vasquez Ridge.
Vital statistics: The vertical rise is 3,060 feet with the 2,886 skiable acres, 22 lifts and 134 trails. They claim an average showfall of 365 inches. Special facilities include a NASTAR course, video arena, three terrain parks, half-pipe, snowshoe tours, snowcat tours, snowmobile tours and, for the romantics, evening gondola rides. Season is November 15 to April 22.
The Lift, a free local shuttle, runs daily throughout the valley. Weekend nights, the Smart Shuttle delivers patrons from local restaurants and bars to their doorsteps between 10:30 p.m. and 2 a.m.
Contact phone number is 970-726-5514 and snow report number is 1-970-726-SNOW.
